Basketball Overseas

So you’re done playing college. What next? Sure you had five good years at university, a few all-stars, division champs. But what next? You didn’t get drafted but you still wanna ball. You’ve got your education. You could work. Do you have a plan?

More and more Canadian and foreign players are realizing there are all kinds of leagues in which to play basketball overseas , not just the N.B.A.

During my career I got to play basketball in various different leagues in several different countries.

I got my start in New Zealand back in the late 1980’s with a team called Whangarei. Small town situated north of Aukland with a population of 150,000. We toured there with SFU in 1986 and they were in need of an import player. I liked the city and the people and decided to play there. It was a good fit but the basketball wasn’t great. But it was a good start and hey I was playin’ ball and getting paid.

I quickly realized that not only was I the player but I was the coach as well and well the person in charge of basketball development. I assembled the crew and quickly realized that they were more akin to rugby players than basketball players. But able to schedule our own practices and play we quickly became a damn good team and basketball was fun.

After two years in New Zealand I headed off to play basketball overseas but this time in Germany. Division 2 in the Northern league in a town called Wolfenbuttel, south of Hannover. Division 2 was quick with fast paced basketball movement. It was a mixed team with players from Germany, the US, Poland, Italy and of course Canada.

My point being is that basketball does not have to end after university. I have seen too many players stop playing competitively in Canada for lack of a league and contacts to make the jump into the pro leagues and to play offshore.

You don’t have to be a footer or a superstar you just have to be a decent player and find the right fit. You also have to keep on developing as a player.

So if you’re finishing college and want to ball give it some thought. Somewhere out there a team is looking for a player like yourself. Hoop Hype is here to help you develop as a player first and foremost and then help you find that job playing basketball overseas.

Stay tuned for more information on how we can help you.

The Professional Basketball Player

By Paul Bale

My dream as a kid playing hoops every day, all day for years, was to be in the NBA. To be one of the lucky 450 players that finds themselves on a NBA roster! Alas, it is very easy to dream, and set your goals as high as you want. However, the reality of many dreams is that they stay dreams forever.

There are hundreds of thousands of above average to great hoopsters all over the world! Many of which, don’t have much of a chance, as the odds are extremely difficult to overcome, if not impossible.

Dreams can and do come true! At the wise age of 30, I decided to challenge myself, and commit to my dream…to become a professional basketball player and play basketball overseas.

I had decided not to allow any negative thought process enter my state of mind, to believe in myself, and address the necessary steps needed to achieve my dreams and goals.

I sold everything that I owned, quit a great job, broke off any relationships that I had remaining in Vancouver, and simply followed my heart. My passion to prove anyone who had doubted me, as the underlying fires burning deep within my soul would help lead me on a journey of self- discovery.

Over the next 7 seasons, I played basketball overseas for 9 teams as a professional player, realizing my dreams, fulfilling a life long quest.

How did I do this? What sacrifices are needed to achieve such a lofty goal? How can you too make this happen? Where do I start? Who do I trust to seek the necessary information?

All great questions…the answer is Planet Hoops…at www.Hoop-Hype.net. An athlete in this day and age must not only train physically, but be prepared for the rigors of daily life in a foreign environments. Athletes must also be mentally tough as basketball is a demanding game, 80% mental…20% physical.

At Planet Hoops, our mission is to provide our athletes with all the important information surrounding the exciting challenges in today’s competitive sports market and to get them to their goal of playing basketball overseas.

A Pro basketball player should have a professional, knowledgeable agent. This relationship must work together as a cohesive unit, helping each other in dealing with all the challenges that await athletes in the professional world of hoops.

There are contracts to be signed, agents, lawyers sought…Then there are Managers of teams overseas, Presidents of teams making decisions…Coaches choosing players watching hundreds of tapes and DVD’s…there are flights to make…meetings to be held…accommodation found…insurance covered…meals…equipment…car. Adapting to a foreign country…language barriers…religious barriers.

The competition is intense, the stakes are raised very high…Planet Hoops is there to help…console, negotiate, provide training schedules, and simply oversee young athletes achieve their dreams. If you want to play basketball overseas then look no further.

Hoop Hype is Contagious-Don’t forget your shot!
